immunity, impunity

immunity, impunity
These "look-alikes" mean "exemption," but immunity has a larger number of applications. Impunity means only "exemption from punishment" or "freedom from unpleasant consequences": "You cannot disobey the law with impunity." "No one can exhaust himself physically with impunity." Immunity shares these meanings with impunity but also means a state of being exempt from (not subject to) a disease and from any liability, obligation, or service: "He was granted immunity from local taxation." "He was healthy enough to think that he possessed immunity from all diseases."
